..................................

After 15 wonderful years, our experiment in creativity and community Art has come to an end.
Designed to create an experience rather then create money, this experiment has run it's course.
It marked a very special time for many of us in Vancouver.
We have loved the spirit of this gift, and maybe one day it will return in another form.

In 1992 Garry Davis was inspired to celebrate his birthday with a simple theme.
Orange

His curiosity to see how many people it would take to turn a place Orange started with a bag of Cheetos.
Over the next few years the seed germinated with yearly gatherings at various locations from Vancouver to Oregon, with the likes of the "international Orange Party" (Oregon), the "Emergency Orange Party" (Trout Lake Community Centre). Then in 1996 (The year I found it) at a little location on 27th near Main street an eclectic group of East Vancouver Artists and Musicians created a bizarre little Jam night with Fire that would become the template for the Legendary Orange Parties at Trout Lake.

In the following years this experiment in "You Want It, You Do It" creativity, moved with Garry Davis to Trout Lake, where it took on legendary proportions.
With the likes of Jill Santhorp, Hoff, Priscilla Costa, Candace Wagman, Dan Vie and the Fools Society, The Carnival Band, and most of the East Vancouver Freaks, we rocked the little bungalow with a wild sense of creative community spirit. For four years Gary gave freely to housing the Orange Collection, and donated thousands of dollars to expenses like the Legendary Hot Tub, food and drink.

Each November we would gather and begin to plot the transformation of his tiny Bungalow into a disorienting wonderland of Orange Art.
With such memories as:

    * The Naughty Potty: 20 hours of time spent covering the entire Bathroom in 70's Porn.
    * The Boudoir Bathroom: 25 Hours of transforming the bathroom into a boudoir restroom.
    * The inner Sanctum: 40 hours creating a maze of Orange Streamers to a secret chill room.
    * The Tunnel to RV: Disorienting people as they left the house through the back yard through an RV, around a corner to the Garage.
    * The Orange Hot Tub: Turning the water of the hot tub a milky orange with colour therapy crystals.
    * The Small Bartender: Pip the gorgeous and very small woman who graciously served free drinks from the tiny window of the tiny room, with a tiny chair and tiny bar.
    * The Organic Walls: 30 hours of stretching cloth around corners throughout the house to create an organic space.
    * The Big Brother Wall: Gary's baby and personal creation which took 40 hours of Black Light patience.
    * The Phoenix: Alexandra's Black Light creation that hung around for many years.
    * The Calligraphy of Orange: Many phrases that where hand scribed with orange phrases.
    * The Giant Cheeto Dispenser
    * Covering the entire house with Orange Tarp.
    * An Orange Courtyard
    * Orange Archway
    * Orange Wall of Fame
    * The Super Orange Chill Room full with Beds
    * Karlis and his old sauna truck.
    * And MOST ESPECIALLY.... Gary's Beautiful Orange Pujas (The Heart and Soul of every legendary Orange Party).

Countless hours where spent by countless creative participants.
We kept it very simple.

"Anything you want as long as it's Orange"

Everyone who came to the Orange Parties Participated.
By donating Orange Food and Drink and by creating Orange Art.
For 10 years this was a FREE BYO-Orange experiment.

After 6-8 weeks of creative preparation we'd host the event.
For those of us that took the time to get creative, the weeks leading up to the event were the real party for us.
The night of the Orange Party was the celebration of all that expressive and collaborative effort.
Usually 400+ people would descend on this little bungalow in the park, dressed head to toe in Orange.
We'd boogy all night to acoustic jams and eat and drink the night away with Orange Food, and Orange Drink.

After 3 years of this, the Orange Party began it's transformation, exploring the realm of electronic music and asking everyone to be responsible for the costs.
The first year we did this (02/02/02), it was an all included event for $22.22 and 1 square foot of creativity.

We eventually covered the entire outside of the house Orange as well (along with several interior rooms, a tunnel to an RV, the tree in the Yard, The Garage and the hot tub).
As Gary would say it was "Over the Top", as the Carnival Band would play like firecrackers and lead us out to the Park for some insane Fire Performances with Chainsaw Juggling, Pyrotechnics, Fire Breathing, Fire Dancing, and general mayhem. One of the best moments in the history of the Orange Party, was having 20 Police officers and the Chief of police show up to tell us that concussive mortars at 1am weren't cool.
They were kind about it (I had my Pyro Certificate), and let the party continue as long as we shut down the Pyro.

Eventually Gary had to move.
This was the beginning of the destabilization of this wonderful creative experiment.
As the Orange Collection moved around it was hard to find a place that would give us 8 weeks of setup time. 3 more places gave us some time.

The legendary 333 West 7th Orange Party was probably the top of the charts.
With three floors of space, and a great deal of time spent cleaning up and clearing the back yard (Thanks to Gavin and Conal) in anticipation of the most over the top Orange Party.
We replaced the hot tub motor, hauled away a ton of shrub, cleared out large underbrush, laid down carpet, secured a giant tarp over the back yard, projected visuals from Fools Parades on a 50ft wall, had an internal ccd system set up so people could hide in the basement and watch the party from under the deck in a long and narrow chill space, it was a massive undertaking, and made for some legendary stories, including the Fire Show that caught my hair on fire and the ZEDTV, and News Coverage. Overall it was a surreal experience.

After that the Orange Party was celebrated in Korea, and people as far as Texas and Toronto heard about this crazy happening.
We then took this creative experiment to Burning Man for 3 years, two of which were incredibly over the top, thanks to the likes of Eric Ainsly and the EmoDome, Susan & Tumbleweed, Micheal Gove, Cabana Boy, and Riff Raff. The Playa never knew what hit them, with many smiles and shouts of delight.

Two more Orange Parties happened.
But with the costs going up and nowhere to store the Orange Stuff, it has come time to let it go.

The Dandelion Blossom Spreads it's fluffy seeds to the wind.
Like a Dandelions Blossom, the seeds of the Orange Party will scatter to the winds.
Maybe one day a seed will take root and the Phoenix will rise again, under a new and self sustaining incarnation.
In the meantime this will live on in memory and legend, inspiring us to express creativity, community spirit and collaborative art.

There are many countless people to thank (some I will miss on this message, but know you are remembered)
In no particular order.

    * Candace Wagman

With loving memories,
